05/17/20263 mins Read
Located just a short drive from Sarajevo, tucked between high mountains, lies Travnik—the historical capital of the Ottoman governors (Viziers) of Bosnia. This charming town feels like an open-air museum, offering a peaceful look into the country's rich history, stunning spring waters, and famous culinary secrets.
1. Climb the Medieval Fortress
Dominating the town’s skyline is the beautifully preserved Travnik Fortress (Stari Grad). A short walk to the top rewards you with breathtaking views of the surrounding valley, traditional red-roofed houses, and the surrounding mountains. Inside the fortress, you can explore museum exhibits detailing the town's medieval and Ottoman past.
2. Relax at Plava Voda (Blue Water)
One of the most peaceful spots in Bosnia is Plava Voda, a fast-flowing, crystal-clear spring running right through the town. Sit back at a riverside café, listen to the rushing water, and try the famous "Lutvina Kafa" (Lutvo's Coffee), which traditionally comes with a cigarette, a box of matches, and a piece of Turkish delight.
3. Taste the Authentic Travnički Sir
You cannot leave Travnik without visiting the local market or a traditional tavern to try Travnički sir (Travnik cheese). This famous white, salted sheep's milk cheese has been made on the nearby Vlašić Mountain for centuries and pairs perfectly with hot homemade bread.
